Nationwide Title Clearing, Inc. employees volunteered a full day's work and resources to build a home for a low-income family. Efforts on the part of organizations such as NTC have contributed to a decrease in the number of homeless in the State of Florida.
Though most residents are unaware, Florida currently has the third largest homeless community in the nation, totaling some 50,000 individuals and families, and constituting 6% of the state's population. Community members have decided to take a stand and change conditions in this arena by supporting organizations such as Habitat for Humanity. As a result of these efforts, Florida has seen the largest decrease in homelessness in the country since 2012, by helping 8,000 people to get their own homes. Nationwide Title Clearing, Inc. (NTC), a leading research and document-processing provider for the mortgage and financial industry, is one community member that decided to get involved with the initiative to decrease the number of people living on Florida streets. In May, several staff members of NTC volunteered a full day's work to build a home for a family that would not have been able to afford the home otherwise.
Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is a nonprofit organization based on Christian principles. They work in conjunction with volunteers and struggling low-income families to provide affordable, clean housing. The current mission of this organization is to eliminate substandard housing altogether in Pinellas County. (2) Habitat for Humanity is successful at establishing a sense of responsibility in the community, being that they do not simply "give" homes to the poor; all homeowners purchase the homes at 0% interest and are required to pay taxes, insurance, utilities and closing costs, and to pay back the cost of the home. They are then required to participate in a program of "sweat equity," which requires single parents to complete a minimum of 250 hours volunteering with Habitat Pinellas, and couples to complete a minimum of 350 hours.
Over 20 people worked overtime (16+ hours) to build the home on a Saturday last month. NTC was represented by four staff members, and partnered with members of the Clearwater Young Professionals to support this event.
"We intend to be involved in future Habitat for Humanity events," said John Hillman, NTC CEO. "Not only did we help a family in need, we walked away with a strong sense of community pride."
NTC is familiar with giving back to the community, being that their recent efforts have included participating in the Greater Palm Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce Citrus Festival, at which they hosted a tent for children's arts activities; fundraising and walking overnight at Relay For Life, which benefits the American Cancer Society; and attending the YMCA of the Suncoast's Ice Cream Social, at which they celebrated the YMCA's recent successes with their capital campaign.
NTC, perhaps best known for its expertise in extensive research and document-processing services such as lien release processing, is an advocate for best practices and legislation that standardize the mortgage industry for the betterment of homeowners, land records and the industry at large.
