NTC recently attended the legislative meeting held at the Greater Palm Harbor Chamber of Commerce to show continued support of elected government officials, in conjunction with an effort to expand the company's CSR efforts within the community.
Nationwide Title Clearing, Inc. (NTC), a leading research and document-processing provider for the mortgage and financial industry, recently attended the legislative breakfast meeting hosted by the Greater Palm Harbor Chamber of Commerce. NTC officials attended the meeting in furtherance of the company's continuing dedication of supporting and working closely with federal, state and local representatives. In addition to the need to remain informed concerning the issues and opportunities being discussed within legislative bodies, NTC says the session was an opportunity for the company to further its goal of remaining an active part of the local community.
According to a recent survey, fewer than 30 percent of executives believed their external affairs groups had the organizational setup and talent necessary to succeed in the realm of government affairs (1)—a direct contrast to NTC's standard of government relations, which the company says exists in recognition of the fact that its employees live, work and participate in many local community events. According to NTC CEO John Hillman, understanding the legislative and regulatory agendas being pursued by elected representatives allows NTC to tailor its support of community events to align with the programs that benefit NTC's employees.
"Our elected officials want to see meaningful investments within their communities," said Hillman. "At NTC, we strive to fully perform our civic duties, and we can only do that to the extent that we are engaged in continuing conversations with our elected officials."
As a company, NTC has demonstrated its dedication to the Tampa Bay area by way of its involvement in many community outreach activities, including toy, food and blood drives. NTC also supports Toys for Tots and the annual Harbor Art Festival, and has raised over $43,000 for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Palm Harbor over its four years of participation.
In addition to its community-focused efforts, NTC also applies its core business mission to its government relations. As an in-depth land records research company, and NTC's approach is often to obtain research data from multiple sources to verify its accuracy. NTC's Chief Legal Officer, Myron Finley, says that local representatives have voiced concerns and stated a need for accuracy and complete understanding of relevant data with regard to representing their constituencies. For this reason, NTC has established contacts with each of its representatives in order to provide them with any pertinent information they may require.
"Developing a relationship with our officials is critical so that they can understand our industry and how it affects their constituents," said Finley. "Forums such as the legislative breakfast allow us to stay informed and, in turn, educate for the greater good of Palm Harbor and Tampa Bay."
For companies looking to implement an active government relations strategy, Hillman suggests first identifying current or future issues that may have an effect on company practices, employees' quality of work/home life, and the area as a whole. In addition, recognizing that a government relations program should not be entered or exited quickly, the goal is to establish long-term, ongoing relationships is key, per Hillman.
NTC, perhaps best known for its expertise in extensive research and document-processing services such as lien release processing, is an advocate for best practices and legislation that standardize the mortgage industry for the betterment of homeowners, land records and the industry at large.
